3rd Annual OUTDOOR SCREENING OF A "BEST PICTURE" NOMINEE
Join us under the stars for food, drink, socializing, and a movie in Echo Park
Continuing our movie night/film screening series for the UChicago Alumni Club of L.A., we will enjoy an evening of food and film appreciation under the stars as we screen one of the 2020 Academy Awards nominees for Best Picture.
The event will be held at the private residence of a UChicago alum in the Echo Park neighborhood (close to Chavez Ravine and Dodger Stadium); for the sake of our hosts' privacy, registrants will be notified directly with the address in the days leading up to the event.
Academy Award nominations will be announced on Monday, January 13, 2020. Rather than picking one film from all nominees (up to 10 of them) on the night of the screening, in the 10 days leading up to the event registrants will have the opportunity to vote in an online poll to narrow the options to three films. (Excluding “The Irishman”, should it be nominated: given its 3.5 hour run-time, it’s too long for an outdoor screening during winter — even in Los Angeles!) The night of the event, we'll have the top three films as determined by the online poll; we will select which of these three films to screen based on (a) a show of hands, (b) rock / paper / scissors, or (c) some other unbiased scientific method!
Doors open at 6 p.m. for food & drinks; at 7 p.m. we'll select a movie and get the screening underway.
Note that this screening event will take place outdoors on the back deck of the home (which our hosts have equipped with a built-in movie screen and projector/sound system). While the deck is equipped with heaters and a fire pit, guests are advised to dress warmly (or bring a blanket): the average high in Los Angeles for January 25 is 65°F but the average low is 49°F, and after the sun sets the temps will likely veer toward the lower end of this range. (Even so, we've all lived through Chicago winters: watching a movie outdoors when temperatures are in the 50°'s is practically balmy!)
Advance registration is required of all attendees (i.e., no one can just show up the night of the event); attendance will be capped at 40 people (with a wait list to be established in case we exceed the limit and there are subsequent cancellations).
The $10 per person registration fee will help defray costs of food & drink which will be provided at the event. As featured at this event in past years, the dining selections will feature Chicago-style pizza and salad from Masa of Echo Park, gourmet popcorn, and various beverages (boozy and non-alcoholic).
