PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF EVENT START TIME - Mt. Wilson Star Party

A night of observing the heavens under Mt. Wilson's famous 100-inch telescope

Join us for a very special night under the stars! This event features a night of observing through Mt. Wilson's famous 100-inch telescope, which revolutionized our understanding of astronomy in the 20th century. Telescope operators will guide us through the greatest hits that can be seen from our location.

The 100-inch telescope at Mt. Wilson was designed by George Ellery Hale and completed in 1908, and was at the time the largest telescope in the world. There is a strong UChicago connection to this observatory, as Hale had previously built the 40-inch telescope at UChicago's own Yerkes Observatory, as well as the 60-inch telescope at Mt. Wilson. UChicago alum Edwin Hubble used this telescope to take data that proved that the universe was expanding.

The observing night will also include a tour of the observatory as well as a short talk from a UChicago alum. Snacks will be provided, however, attendees are encouraged to have a full meal before-hand.

If you have any questions please contact event host Shannon Towey AB'15 at stowey@uchicago.edu; (626) 710-8661.

"The high elevation of the Observatory (5715 ft) is unsuitable for individuals with respiratory and heart problems or with limited mobility. The century-old facilities are not ADA-compliant and, except for the Astronomical Museum and the Cosmic Cafe, offer no access to those who cannot climb multiple flights of stars. Thus, tours of the Observatory, either guided or unguided, are inappropriate for some elderly people and for those who are not in good health. Visitors should take these factors into consideration before touring the Observatory."
