SOLD OUT - WAIT LIST ONLY - ANTARCTIC DINOSAURS EXHIBIT PRIVATE TOUR WITH PALEONTOLOGIST NATHAN SMITH SM'08, PHD'11
Private Tour of Special Antarctic Dinosaurs Exhibit and Dinosaur Lab at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
Join Dr. Nathan Smith, University of Chicago PhD in Evolutionary Biology and Associate Curator of the Dinosaur Institute at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM), for a first person account and exclusive behind the scenes private tour of his special Antarctic Dinosaurs exhibit at the NHM that features his work in Antarctica.
The Antarctic Dinosaurs exhibit chronicles the story of Dr. Smith's travels to Antarctica to unearth new species of dinosaurs beneath the ice and stone along with Dr. Pete Makovicky, Curator of Dinosaurs at Chicago's Field Museum. You'll be able to ask Dr. Smith first hand what it was like in Antarctica!
Visitors will experience Dr. Smith's adventure themselves, as they choose protective gear and supplies, drop in on snow school training, and set up their remote Antarctic field site. Hands-on excavation activities, touchable specimens, and media touchscreens take visitors behind-the-scenes on what these expeditions are really like!
Dr. Smith will also provide a private tour of the dinosaur lab at the NHM, where paleontologists today work to study and uncover fossil specimens. Who knows, you may see a Cryolophosaurus skull!
Prior to joining the NHM, Dr. Smith served as a postdoctoral research scientist at the Field Museum of Natural History. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and National Geographic, and focuses on the evolution and biogeography of Triassic–Jurassic dinosaurs, Cenozoic waterbirds, scleractinian corals, and the application of phylogenetic comparative methods to broad questions in systematic biology and paleontology. The origin and initial diversification of dinosaurs represents one of the most poorly known events of vertebrate evolution, and much of Dr. Smith's recent research in Ghost Ranch, New Mexico and the Central Transantarctic Mountains has helped to fill major geographic, temporal, and taxonomic gaps in our understanding of early dinosaurs and the world they inhabited.
