Join us this Saturday at 8 AM to hike the iconic Mt Baldy; at 10,064 feet in elevation, its bald peaks are instantly recognizable to the any native Angeleno and can be seen from miles away as the highest point in LA. This tough but popular hike climbs almost 4000 feet in 11 miles to sweeping views from the Pacific to the Mojave.
We will meet at the trailhead at Manker Flats just past Manker Campground. You can look on Google Maps for Mt Baldy Trailhead on your Google Maps. There is parking on both sides of the road near the trailhead though it can get packed; more parking is available further up along the road as well, but make sure you pay attention to the signs. The parking lot does require an Adventure Pass permit or the National Parks Pass. Please message me at 626.476.3427 to let me know you’re coming as there is no signal at the trailhead. Also let me know if you’d like to try to carpool.
The weather looks to be ideal for the hike with temperatures in the mid-60s to start at the base and dropping to mid-high 40s at the peak with elevation. Conditions for the top of Mt Baldy are notorious for being windy and cold, so bring at least a light jacket. Also bring snacks/lunch and plenty of water. You may want up to 3L of water for this hike. Sunscreen is also a good idea; weather should be clear and cold.
For people who have never hiked to this altitude before, be warned that some people have problems that far above sea level. We will be taking it relatively slow to allow our bodies to adjust to the high altitude but you may end up wheezing and struggling a bit more than usual. Trekking poles are also recommended for that reason.
We will be starting on the beautiful Devil’s Backbone Trail to the peak and the descending via the Baldy Bowl Trail to the Sierra Club Ski Hut back to Manker Flats. More information can be found here: https://hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/best-la-hikes/mt-baldy-hike/
