2nd Annual OUTDOOR SCREENING OF A BEST PICTURE NOMINEE

This event SOLD OUT last year, so register ASAP! Join us under the stars for food, drink, socializing, and a movie in Echo Park.

Continuing our movie night/film screening series for the UChicago Alumni Club of L.A., we will enjoy an evening of food and film appreciation under the stars as we screen one of the 2019 Academy Awards nominees for Best Picture.

The event will be held at the private residence of a UChicago alumn in the Echo Park neighborhood (close to Chavez Ravine and Dodger Stadium); for the sake of our hosts' privacy, registrants will be notified directly with the address in the days leading up to the event.

The Best Picture nominees were announced on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.  They are --

  • Black Panther
  • BlacKKKlansman
  • Bohemian Rhapsody
  • The Favourite
  • Green Book
  • Roma
  • A Star Is Born
  • Vice

Rather than picking one film from all eight nominees the night of the screening, in the week leading up to the event, registrants will have the opportunity to vote in an online poll to narrow the options to three films. The night of the event, we'll have the top three films on hand (based on poll results). We will then select the favourite -- see what we did there?!? -- to screen based on (a) a show of hands, (b) rock / paper / scissors, or (c) some other unbiased scientific method!

Doors open at 6 p.m. for food & drinks; at 7 p.m. we'll take the vote and get the screening underway.

Note that this screening event will take place outdoors on the back deck of the home (which our hosts have equipped with a built-in movie screen and projector/sound system). While there are heaters and a fire pit on the deck, guests are advised to dress warmly: the average high in Los Angeles on February 16 is 68°F, but the average low is 50°F, and after the sun sets, the temps will likely veer toward the lower half of this range. (Even so, we've all lived through Chicago winters: watching a movie outdoors when temperatures are in the 50°'s is practically balmy!)

Advance registration is required of all attendees (i.e., no one can just show up the night of the event); attendance will be capped at 40 people, with a wait list to be established if we exceed that limit and there are subsequent cancellations.

The $10 per person registration fee will help defray costs of food & drink which will be provided at the event. As featured at this sold-out event in 2018, the dining selections will feature Chicago-style pizza from Masa of Echo Park, gourmet popcorn, and various beverages (boozy and non-alcoholic).
