cancelled - Outdoor Movie Night (the sequel): Here We (Chica)go Again!
Join us under the stars for food, drink, socializing, and a movie featuring Chicago — perhaps UChicago specifically! — in Echo Park
Whether you purchased a Doc Films season pass every quarter, or you're an infrequent moviegoer, this will be a fun night of film appreciation under the stars. Continuing our movie nights/film screenings series, we will screen a movie that features some kind of UChicago connection (or at least one that was filmed primarily in the Windy City).
The movie to be screened will be selected by a game of chance the night of the event. In advance of the event, registrants will be asked to suggest movies that either:
- have a character, setting, or other connection with The University of Chicago [for example, in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones is identified as a graduate of UChicago], or
- is set in the Chicago area, without any UChicago ties [examples: The Blues Brothers, The Untouchables, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Dark Knight, etc.].
We will take 10-12 of the most popular "nominees", put the names of these films on a carnival spinning wheel, and give it a spin; we'll screen whatever movie comes up when the wheel stops.
This event will be held at the private residence of a UChicago alum in the Echo Park neighborhood (close to Chavez Ravine and Dodger Stadium). Registrants will be notified directly with the address in the days leading up to the event. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for food & drinks; we'll get the screening underway around 6:30 p.m.
Advance registration is required of all attendees (i.e., no one can just show up the night of the event); attendance will be capped at 40 people, with a wait list to be established if we exceed that limit. Our "Best Picture" outdoor movie event sold out last February, so purchase your tickets well in advance to avoid being wait-listed.
The $10 per person registration fee will help defray costs of food & drink provisions; dinner will feature Chicago-style deep-dish pizzas from Masa of Echo Park.
Note that this event will take place outdoors on the back deck of a home (which our hosts have equipped with a built-in movie screen and projector/sound system). While there are heaters and a fire pit on the deck, guests are advised to dress warmly: the average high in Los Angeles on November 10 is 72°F, but the average low is 52°F, and after the sun sets the temps will likely veer toward the lower half of this range. But hey — we've all lived through Chicago autumns: watching a movie outdoors when temperatures are in the 50°'s is practically balmy!
