Shakespeare In The (Griffith) Park: A Midsummer Night's Dream
Sometimes ya gotta say "what the Puck?!?" Bring a picnic and get your Bard on for this outdoor performance!
Join fellow UChicago LA alumni and friends as we venture to the Old Zoo in Griffith Park to attend the Independent Shakespeare Festival's performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream -- "It’s hard to tell where reality ends and dreams begin in this intoxicating joyride of a play. Otherwordly creatures, lovers on the run, and a group of amateur actors all converge in a deep forest outside of Athens. When their worlds collide, chaos ensues and nothing but magic has the power to set things right before the sun comes up."
Independent Shakespeare Festival (ISF) has graciously consented to set aside a picnic area for UChicago alumni and their guests; to find us the evening of the performance, look for a UChicago flag flying above our picnic area, or call/text Dante A. Bacani at 312.375.7886 so we can guide you to us.
Best of all, admission is FREE! (However, donations are gratefully accepted at the entry to the grounds and/or when the cast does a "pass-the-hat" before the performance.)
Note that there is no physical street address for the Old Zoo / ISF staging area: the (very) nearby ranger station is at 4730 Crystal Springs Drive, Los Angeles, CA, 90027, and the closest GPS location is 34.134204, -118.284962.
ISF encourages your consideration of those around you! Low seat beach chairs (legs lower than 3") are welcome behind the chair line. The lower area closest to the stage is reserved for those with picnic blankets.
As a courtesy to those around you, ISF asks you to leave your four-legged friends at home.
ISF welcomes children at our performances! However, these are not Shakespeare performances edited or changed for children. Shakespeare wrote about the human experience, and his plays include examples of sexuality and violence, and deal with adult themes. Email ISF at email@example.com and they'll be happy to answer any specific questions you may have about particular performances. And please, keep your children with you at all times.
There is an uphill walk from the parking areas to our performance site. If you have mobility challenges, please call ISF at 818.710.6306 to make arrangements.
Don't forget your picnic! (Note: alcohol is prohibited in Los Angeles City parks.)
Dress in layers as it gets chilly in the evening.
ISF has a concessions tent with hot and cold beverages, sweet treats from The Village Bakery & Café (a local Atwater Village small business), kettle corn, light snacks and Habey’s Shakes (“The Bard of Shortbread” cookies baked in NYC especially for Independent Shakespeare Co.) Cash and credit cards accepted.
You may find that bug spray and sunscreen are also helpful to bring with you.
