April Hike to the Bridge  to Nowhere

On Sunday, April 29th join your friends for a hike to the Bridge to Nowhere! The hike will be an all-day affair, 10 miles roundtrip, and feature multiple river crossings. Be prepared to get wet!

The Bridge to Nowhere hike is a classic SoCal hike that follows the East Fork of the San Gabriel River up to the namesake “Bridge to Nowhere”. The trail roughly tracks the remains of an old road that attempted to connect Wrightwood with Azusa, running North-South through the mountains. Unfortunately, the project ran out of money and the constructed sections were wiped away by a flood in 1938 – the rest as they say is history.

The out-and-back hike is about 10-11 miles roundtrip with a moderate elevation gain of about 800 feet. This is a long, all-day hike and you should expect the actual hiking time to be over 5 hours. I would classify this as an intermediate difficulty hike for the length and this hike’s defining feature – river crossings. As we follow the East Fork upriver, there are multiple opportunities for river crossings where getting wet will be unavoidable. I expect water levels to be high from the recent rains and as long as the weather stays warm, splashing from shore to shore will pose a cool adventure – pun intended.

The hike ends at a 120-foot-high concrete bridge constructed above some mini-rapids and waterfalls. The truly adventurous can pay cash for the chance to bungee jump of the bridge on most weekends with a private operator – do so at your own risk! For the rest of us, just past the bridge there are a number of natural swimming pools in which to splash around.

Even though you’ll be walking alongside plenty of water (Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink), pack plenty of drinkable water as shade will be in rare supply or bring your own water filtration system! I also highly recommend non-waterproof hiking shoes and trekking poles, though they are not necessary; talk to me if you have any questions here.

An Adventure Pass will be required for parking in the small parking lot at the trailhead and should be purchased ahead of time for anyone planning to drive in to the trailhead. Parking fills up quickly so please plan to carpool. To help facilitate things, we will meet at the Target in Azusa (809 N Azusa Ave, Azusa, CA 91702) at 7:30 AM on Sunday, April 29th to consolidate cars.

From there head north on Azusa Ave/CA-39 for ~12 miles, then turn right onto East Fork Road. In 3.3 miles, stay to the right to keep on East Fork Road and in 1.9 miles make a sharp left onto Camp Bonita Road. This road ends at the trailhead.

Contact event host Shao-Yi Qian AB'15 directly if you have any questions regarding parking or meeting up prior to the hike: syq@uchicago.edu; (626) 476-3427.
