SOLD OUT-WAIT LIST ONLY-Movie Night: Outdoor screening of a Best Picture Nominee
Join us under the stars for food, drink, socializing, and a movie in Echo Park
Continuing our movie nights/film screenings series for the UChicago Alumni Club of LA, we will screen one of the 2018 Academy Awards nominees for Best Picture. Whether you purchased a Doc Films season pass every quarter, or you just like to Get Out — see what we did there? — and see a good movie every once in a while, this will be a fun night of film appreciation under the stars (weather permitting!).
The event will be held at the private residence of a UChicago alumnus in the Echo Park neighborhood (close to Chavez Ravine and Dodger Stadium). For the sake of privacy, registrants will be notified directly with the address in the days leading up to the event.
The Best Picture category usually has 8-10 nominees; nominations will be announced about 10 days in advance of the event. Rather than picking one film from all nominees the night of the screening, in the week leading up to the event, registrants will have the opportunity to vote in an online poll to narrow the options. The night of the event, we'll have on-hand the top 3 films based on poll results, from which we'll select a "winner" based on (a) a show of hands, (b) rock / paper / scissors, or (c) some other unbiased scientific method!
Doors open at 6 p.m. for food & drinks; at 7 p.m. we'll get the screening(s) underway. The plan is to show one film; however, if the screening choice is relatively short — and our hosts are amenable! — we might show a second film.
Note that this screening event will take place outdoors on the back deck of the home (which our hosts have equipped with a built-in movie screen and projector/sound system). While there are heaters and a fire pit on the deck, guests are advised to dress warmly: the average high in Los Angeles on February 3 is 68°F, but the average low is 48°F, and after the sun sets, the temps will likely veer toward the lower half of this range. Even so, we've all lived through Chicago winters: watching a movie outdoors when temperatures are in the 50°'s is practically balmy!
Advance registration is required of all attendees (i.e., no one can just show up the night of the event); attendance will be capped at 35 people, with a wait list to be established if we exceed that limit and there are subsequent cancellations.
The $10 per person registration fee will help defray costs of food & drink which will be provided at the event. The menu is as of yet undetermined, but we're hoping to provide food with a "Chicago" connection: deep-dish pizzas or Chicago-style hot dogs are possibilities, and if that rumored Los Angeles location of Harold's Chicken Shack opens in time, all bets are off!
If the forecast calls for rain between 6-10 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, registered attendees will be notified of postponement (via phone, email, or text msg.) by 5 p.m. that evening. A rain date of Sunday, February 11, (5 p.m. door / 6 p.m. screening) has been established in case of postponement.
