Join us for this unique and inspiring event.

When most of us think of Italy between the 1300’s and 1700’s, we think of a period in which various forms of human creativity flourished. Beginning with a Renaissance that altered human history with its flowering of art, philosophy and architecture, a continuing evolution of creativity spread throughout the entire peninsula during these five centuries, offering art forms that continue to inspire the world to this day. During this particularly prolific 500-year period, Italy reigned supreme in the western world for the production of paintings and set the standard for technique and artistic quality in this medium.
 

Not coincidentally, and in line with the creative atmosphere of this place and time, innovations were also emerging in the culinary arts as a new “Italian cuisine” began to take shape. Join Getty museum educator and chef, Robin Trento, for a hands-on culinary experience that will engage multiple senses in celebrating this culture of boundless creativity. This workshop will focus on two “delectable” art forms, combining a power-point overview of original Italian paintings housed in Los Angeles museums, with the creation and consumption of a 5-course, Italian meal, and highlighting innovations in both areas by century and region.

The course will begin with a PowerPoint overview of Italian paintings housed in local museums, focusing on highlights and innovations from each of the centuries in discussion. You will then transition into the kitchen to create a 5-course meal highlighting an Italian culinary innovation from each of the centuries within our timeframe. You will prepare the meal following authentic period recipes,and then be seated to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Each person will receive a handout to take home containing essays and recipes for future replication.

  • 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Food preparation
  • 1:30-2:30 p.m. Lunch


CULINARY COMPONENT
Culinary innovations by century and region comprising workshop’s 5-course Italian meal:

  • 1300s ~ Ravioli con Erbe, from Libro del Cuoco, by anonymous chef from the Veneto region
  • 1400s ~ Prosciutto e Melone, as suggested by 15th century dieticians and described at banquets in Rome
  • 1500s ~ Insalata Mista, prescribed for health by 16th century physician Costanzo Felici, Tuscany region
  • 1600s ~ Tortellini in Brodo, invented in 1600 by apprentice chef in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna region
  • 1700s ~ Meringhe con Amarena, sugar/egg white concoction by chef Gasparini, Lombardy region


INSTRUCTORS
Our instructor will be course creator, Robin Trento. Robin co-founded ArtMuse Los Angeles with Clare Kunny, AM'84, who will be assisting Robin with this event. ArtMuse Los Angeles is a community of art historians, artists, and educators who offer private art tours to small groups – in museums, galleries, artist studios, and private collections throughout the LA region. Robin received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Italian and Art History at the Unviersity of California, Santa Barbara after prior studies at the University of Padua in Italy, and UCLA. For the past 27 years she has worked in the Getty Departments of Education and Drawings, enabling her to accumulate an unparalleled wealth of expertise in the Getty’s collections, and has accompanied Getty teams to the art auctions of Europe in an advisory role in expanding the Getty’s own collections. Robin has also become an acclaimed authority on the collections of many other museums, adding depth and perspective to her expertise.

Clare has served as the Head of Public Teaching at the Getty for the past 10 years, prior to which she held the same position during the latter part of her 17 years at the Art Institute of Chicago. Clare earned her Master of Arts degree in Art History from the University of Chicago and has completed doctoral coursework in colonial Mexican art at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has devoted her career to guiding visitors in viewing, thinking about, and discussing the art found in great museums. Clare is an art historian and museum professional with extensive experience developing educational art programs for museum visitors of all ages.

PARKING
There is free underground parking with handicapped access located on the corner of Lincoln Boulevard and California Avenue. The weekend entrance to the parking garage is on Washington Avenue, as the California Ave entrance is closed. There is also a surface parking lot (doubles as a schoolyard during weekdays) that is available on weekends. Priority for the surface lot is given to those with disabilities, those who need to transport supplies, and those with security concerns. It is requested that unless you have one of these needs, that you park in the garage, so that the newly renovated school yard can be preserved as long as possible. There is also metered and free parking on the street. Please observe the street signs as the Santa Monica Police Department does ticket regularly. Please do not park in any other lots unless directed to do so or block any of the neighbors’ driveways.
