A moderate six mile hike from Altadena to Echo Mountain via the Sam Merrill Trail. One of my favorite hikes in Los Angeles, this is a great trail for hikers of all levels. The top of Echo Mountain showcases old hotel ruins and an expansive view of LA.
Join your fellow alumni on a beautiful six mile hike from the old Cobb Estate in Altadena to the old Echo Mountain House at the peak of Echo Mountain. The Echo Mountain House, an old hotel built in the 1800s by Thaddeus Lowe, burned to the ground in a fire,
but visitors today can still see the old remains of the buildings and the railway that brought visitors up the mountain. The trail takes hikers up 1500 vertical feet via the Sam Merrill Trail with moderately graded switchbacks rising gradually above Altadena and looking out across the San Gabriel Valley. On clear days, those who make it to the top are rewarded with stunning views looking out at the city of Los Angeles.
This hike should take about three hours to complete and is well suited for hikers of all levels. The trail in well maintained and presents a great opportunity for new hikers to get their feet wet or for returning hikers to shake the rust off after a hot summer spent inside of air conditioned buildings or by the Pacific Ocean.
We will meet at the Cobb Estate in Altadena, located at the intersection of East Loma Alta Drive and Lake Avenue at 9:30 a.m. Following the hike, join us for an optional self-hosted lunch at The Hat in Pasadena, a classic institution serving up pastrami sandwiches and chili cheese fries.
Cost: Free; optional lunch self-host
